Look Closely: Announcing the 7 titles for the 7th edition of Fantastic 7

1, 2, 3, 4... all the way to 7 titles, each one selected by a major film festival, coming together to shape the 7th edition of Fantastic 7.

 

The number 7 will once again be on everyone’s lips at the Marché du Film of the Cannes Film Festival. The most important film event in the world will once again host this initiative, led by SITGES, which will unveil some of the standout projects set to define the future of Fantastic Genre.

 

 

Horror, thriller, dark comedy, science fiction... along with possessions, werewolves, mystery novelists... and many other figures make up the wide-ranging spectrum of a new edition of Fantastic 7 that is sure to once again place the very best of Fantastic cinema at the heart of the conversation.

 

On Sunday, May 18, at 12:00 noon, in the Palais K room of the Palais des Festivals in Cannes, we will present these 7 gems:

 

 

 

THE 2025 SELECTION

 

1. 1999 | by David Casademunt

Genre: Horror / Thriller

Abel, a 30-year-old from Barcelona, has a troubling suspicion: was he exorcised as a child? Determined to uncover the truth, he embarks on a gripping journey to track down the ten active exorcists still practicing in Catalonia. This will lead Abel to open the door to an obsession: What if what supposedly possessed him is still inside?

2. SISTERHOOD | by Yoon Eunkyoung

Genre: Thriller / Mistery

Yulhee, a mystery novelist, and her daughter Sohee move to a country house after a difficult divorce. As looking forward to their new routine, they are befriended by a local college student, Mijee, who discovers that she is a fan of Yulhee’s novel, Sisterhood. As Yulhee becomes busier with her new novel, she entrusts Mijee, who works as a housekeeper on the side, to take care of the household chores. Meanwhile, Sohee feels a special friendship with Mijee, who seems to understand her lonely feelings that she can’t express to anyone.

3. EVIL EYE | by Yasir Kareem

Genre: Folk Horror

A brutal water war leads to the sacrifice of five virgins, whose restless spirits become vengeful creatures cursing the land with drought and dust storms. The key to breaking the curse lies in a hidden magical island, revealed only through the dreams of a chosen maiden. Dunia, ostracized due to her family’s dark past, unknowingly holds the key but fails to see the island—until she falls in love with Jamal, a disguised djinn. Their love unlocks the vision. Dunia must make an impossible choice: betray the island to save Jamal or sacrifice her love to restore Iraq’s rivers.

4. CACHORRA | by Elisa Puerto Aubel

Genre: Horror / Science-Fiction

In the border city of Mexicali, a lonely veterinarian discovers a newborn wolf pup abandoned at her doorstep, forging an unbreakable bond. As mutilated bodies start appearing in the desert and her own body undergoes unsettling changes, she unravels a chilling truth—both she and the pup are part of a secret experiment, and only by embracing her wild nature can she fight back.

5. MISTLETOE | by Emily Hagins

Genre: Horror / Body Horror

Christmas, 1981. At the big holiday house party, 18-year-old Kim discovers that this gathering — with its mixture of alcohol, flirting, and teenage embarrassment — is the perfect feeding ground for the mistletoe-inhabited demon, which seems to be thriving off of the teens’ hormones and anxieties by attaching itself like a parasite. Once it starts growing beneath their skin, their worst fears about themselves come to light, and no can be trusted. Now, Kim and her friends have an almost impossible task — get a grip on their insecurities to defeat this evil force, or face something much worse — death.

6. THE LAST MOON | by Sean McConville

Genre: Supernatural Thriller

On the night of a full moon, Max, 35, invites his estranged brother, Fred, 31, to their remote family home to reveal the shocking news that he was attacked by a werewolf. As the evening unfolds, it becomes clear to Fred that Max lured him out to the house to trick him into shooting him with a silver bullet. Why? Because Max believes he’ll transform into a beast at midnight and will kill his beloved wife and daughter. By now, Fred believes Max has inherited the mental illness that runs in their family and does his best to save Max from his delusions, even if it means putting his own life in danger. But as the clock ticks closer to midnight, and the tension continues to build, the evening takes a dark and disturbing turn.

7. FUXI: JOY IN FOUR CHAPTERS | by Qiu Jiongjiong

Genre: Fantasy / Dark Comedy

Four Sichuan bizarre tales: A Funeral Feast 4000 years ago—on the verge of death, a grandma severs her tail and gifts it to her descendants; A Spring Festival 3000 years ago—a former king returns as a cuckoo, only to cough up blood in solitude amidst the feast; A Mid-Autumn Banquet in the 1990s—spirits gather to honour a millennium-old beleaguered epicurean poet; A Birthday Feast from a century back —a waif meets underworld deities, savouring life’s vastness and death’s fickleness; On and off stage, the living and the dead unite to relish in everyday culinary joys.
